Tata Power and Indian Energy Exchange posted notable gains on September 17, 2026, while broader renewable energy peers faced selling pressure or traded flat in a range-bound Indian market session.

Indian equity markets exhibited limited volatility on September 17, 2026, with the S&P BSE Sensex closing at 74,314.59, a marginal 0.03% decline. The NIFTY 50 index ended the session slightly higher at 23,294.35, reflecting a 0.33% gain. Within this subdued trading environment, green energy and power stocks displayed divergent performance, with capital rotating toward established utilities and industrial firms while smaller renewable energy players faced selling pressure.

Tata Power emerged as the sector’s top performer, rising 2.19% on the NSE to close at ₹368.30. Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) also attracted buying interest, increasing 1.83% on the BSE to ₹113.80 and 1.21% on the NSE to ₹113.36. Other advanced energy and mobility names included Olectra Greentech, which gained 1.70% to ₹1,187.80, and JSW Energy, which climbed 1.45% to ₹512.00. Larsen & Toubro added 1.24% to reach ₹3,855.00, while Praj Industries and Amara Raja Energy & Mobility recorded gains between 0.6% and 1.2%.

Battery and Infrastructure Stocks Post Modest Gains

Companies focused on battery storage and energy infrastructure recorded modest positive movement. Exide Industries climbed 0.82% on the NSE to close at ₹418.90, while GAIL increased 0.85% to ₹172.10. These gains suggest continued, albeit limited, investor interest in the physical components of the energy transition, such as storage and gas infrastructure, even as broader market momentum remained flat.

Renewable Energy Peers Face Selling Pressure

Several renewable energy stocks experienced profit-taking and limited demand during the session. Juniper Green Energy was among the significant decliners, dropping 2.39% on the BSE to ₹255.55 and 1.02% on the NSE to ₹261.80. Websol Energy System also fell, declining 1.06% on the BSE to ₹71.54. Indian Oil Corporation slipped 0.53% on the NSE to end the day at ₹134.04. This divergence highlights a selective market approach where investors favored proven utility players over smaller, higher-volatility renewable assets.

Large-Cap Energy Stocks Remain Stable

Large-cap energy entities maintained relative stability with minimal price fluctuations. Adani Green Energy traded near ₹1,270 with negligible movement, while Reliance Industries gained 0.44% on the NSE to close at ₹1,245.50. NTPC Green Energy edged up 0.06% to ₹87.64, and Borosil Renewables and Inox Wind posted modest gains of less than 1%. The overall session reflected a cautious stance, with buying concentrated in established power and infrastructure companies rather than broad-based sector rallies.
