ON Semiconductor posted a 9.18% year-over-year revenue increase in Q2 2026, with free cash flow surging to $425 million as factory utilization rates climbed to 83%.

ON Semiconductor shares closed at $76.14 on September 11, reflecting an 8.51% single-day gain that outpaced specific corporate announcements. The move aligned with a broader semiconductor sector rally rather than distinct company news. Despite the price appreciation, the stock remains well below its June 3 record high of $134.92, even as internal operational metrics show a sustained two-quarter improvement.

The underlying business performance in the second quarter of 2026, reported on August 3, indicated a clear reversal from the prior year’s downturn. Revenue reached $1.60 billion, exceeding the $1.59 billion consensus estimate and marking a 9.18% increase year over year. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.74, slightly above the $0.72 forecast. Free cash flow jumped to $425 million, a significant recovery from the $106 million recorded in the same period last year when the company was navigating the bottom of the industry cycle.

Factory Utilization Drives Margin Expansion

Management has revised its full-year 2026 revenue outlook to more than double the previous year’s figures. CFO Thad Trent detailed the operational mechanics behind this recovery at the Deutsche Bank Technology Conference on August 27. Factory utilization has increased from 68% at the end of 2025 to 83% in the most recent quarter. Trent noted that each point of utilization gain contributes 25 to 30 basis points to gross margin improvement.

With utilization projected to reach the 92% level defined as fully utilized, the remaining headroom offers approximately 250 basis points of additional margin leverage. This is further supported by a richer product mix. The company has stated that heavy capital spending is complete, with current expenditures limited to maintenance levels. No new capacity additions are planned until revenue exceeds current levels by approximately 30%, a threshold designed to protect free cash flow generation.

Vertical GaN and Treo Platform Expansion

ON Semiconductor is advancing its vertical gallium nitride technology, a power device manufacturing process built in its United States fabrication facility. CEO Hassane El-Khoury emphasized the competitive barrier, noting that no other manufacturer has successfully delivered a vertical GaN device and that existing patents protect the company’s position. These components are currently in customer sampling phases for AI data center and automotive applications, though they have not yet generated volume revenue.

The company’s internal analog design platform, Treo, targets a gross margin range of 60% to 70%. Management projects this platform will contribute $1 billion in revenue by 2030. These initiatives underpin the valuation logic, with the stock trading at 13.61 times next twelve months EV/EBITDA. This multiple is lower than NVIDIA’s 14.82x and AMD’s 38.91x, though higher than Texas Instruments’ 19.05x. The primary risk remains cyclical demand, particularly in automotive, and potential supply strain if AI demand accelerates too rapidly.

Market Position and Valuation Context

Investors are currently pricing ON Semiconductor based on its recovery trajectory rather than peak cycle metrics. The stock’s performance reflects a transition from a defensive position to an offensive growth stance, driven by the power silicon portfolio and emerging GaN technology. While the September 11 price action was sector-led, the fundamental improvements in cash flow and margin structure provide a distinct basis for the current valuation. The company’s strategy relies on maintaining high utilization rates to maximize returns on existing assets without requiring significant new capital outlays.
