T. Rowe Price has positioned its Blue Chip Growth ETF (TCHP) around the thesis that durable AI growth stems from structural market advantages rather than transient demand spikes. Paul Greene, the fund’s portfolio manager, argues that investors must distinguish between companies with long-lasting competitive moats and those benefiting from temporary supply shortages. This approach contrasts with broader market narratives that often conflate high current revenue with sustained future profitability, a distinction Greene believes is critical for long-term capital preservation.
The fund, which launched in August 2020, has delivered an annualized return of 12.49% as of recent data. With net assets of $2.1 billion and an expense ratio of 0.57%, TCHP focuses on large-cap companies with above-average growth and profitability. Greene’s strategy relies on bottom-up research to identify firms with defensible business models, aiming to outperform benchmarks through stock selection over a three- to five-year horizon rather than chasing short-term momentum.
Semiconductor Leadership Drives Core Holdings
Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) represents the fund’s largest position at 17.4% of assets, reflecting Greene’s conviction in the company’s dominance of advanced manufacturing and foundry capacity. The portfolio manager views such firms as "linchpin" players that benefit regardless of which specific chip architecture ultimately prevails in the market. This concentration in hardware leaders underscores a preference for companies with deep integration into the physical infrastructure of the AI ecosystem.
Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) ranks as the second-largest holding at approximately 11.4% when both share classes are combined. Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) and Broadcom Inc. (AVGO) follow closely at 5.8% and 5.7% respectively. Greene favors these hyperscalers because their cloud units are integrating AI workflows that create sticky, recurring revenue streams. This diversification across key hardware and cloud providers mitigates risk associated with any single technology platform while capturing the broad expansion of enterprise AI adoption.
Skepticism Toward Traditional Software Models
Greene expresses the least confidence in traditional subscription-based software vendors, arguing that intensifying competition is eroding their pricing power. He notes that these companies face pressure to shift toward usage-based pricing models, which can compress margins and reduce predictability. This caution reflects a broader view that software alone is increasingly vulnerable to disruption compared to integrated hardware and service ecosystems that offer deeper customer lock-in.
The portfolio manager also dismisses concerns that AI shopping agents will significantly disrupt e-commerce. He points to Alphabet’s historical inability to displace online travel agencies despite years of competition, noting that real-world relationships and integrated payment systems proved more resilient than pure software interfaces. This perspective suggests that value in the digital economy often resides in the frictionless execution of transactions rather than in the information retrieval layer alone.
Non-AI Sectors Offer Steady Growth
Beyond the AI trade, Greene identifies global payment networks and aerospace manufacturers as sectors with multi-year earnings growth potential. These industries benefit from structural shifts, such as the transition from cash to digital transactions, and possess strong pricing power independent of technological innovation cycles. By including these non-AI exposures, the fund aims to capture steady cash flow generation that complements the higher-growth, higher-volatility technology holdings, providing a balanced approach to long-term wealth creation.
