TSMC Q2 Earnings Beat Driven by Advanced Packaging Constraints

TSMC's Q2 results show a 10.89% EPS beat and 36% revenue growth, driven by a critical bottleneck in Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate capacity rather than just logic node advances.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. reported second-quarter 2026 earnings that exceeded market expectations, posting earnings per share of $4.31 against a consensus estimate of $3.89. Revenue reached $40.2 billion, marking a 36.0% year-over-year increase, while gross margin expanded to 67.7%, up 9.1 percentage points from the same period last year. The company attributed this performance to sustained demand for leading-edge chips, with nodes at 7nm and smaller accounting for 77% of wafer revenue.
According to data highlighted by GN stocks/chips, the primary driver of this financial strength is not the fabrication of transistors themselves, but the advanced packaging stage known as Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate, or CoWoS. Management noted that packaging capacity has become so constrained that it now limits the growth potential of its customers. This bottleneck creates a pricing advantage for TSMC, as every major artificial intelligence accelerator currently in the market relies on this specific interposer and substrate integration process to function.
Packaging Bottleneck Defines Pricing Power
The constraint lies in the physical connection between the die and the board, rather than in the logic nodes. TSMC stated that its CoWoS capacity is the limiting factor for its clients, effectively making the foundry the gatekeeper for AI hardware deployment. This position allows the company to maintain high margins despite the complexity of modern chip designs. The 3nm node represented 30% of revenue, 5nm accounted for 33%, and the newly commercialized 2nm node contributed 3% in its first quarter of availability.
Competitors such as Intel and GlobalFoundries do not face the same dynamic because they lack the same degree of specialized packaging dominance or leading-edge focus. Intel has struggled with execution on leading-edge nodes, while GlobalFoundries focuses on trailing-edge technologies with no sub-7nm exposure. NVIDIA, a major customer, depends on TSMC’s infrastructure to produce its accelerators, reinforcing TSMC’s position as an essential supplier in the AI value chain.
Guidance Reflects Strong Future Growth
Management raised full-year 2026 growth guidance to slightly above 40% in U.S. dollar terms, following August monthly revenue that rose 53.3% year-over-year. The company projects a compound annual growth rate approaching 25% for the period between 2024 and 2029. Long-term gross margins are expected to remain above 56%, supported by a balance sheet that includes $110 billion in cash and marketable securities. TSMC also indicated that dividends per share will continue to increase in 2027.
Valuation metrics reflect this growth trajectory, with the stock trading at a forward P/E of 20 and a PEG ratio of 0.816. The shares have appreciated 60.06% over the past year and 270.13% over five years. This performance underscores the market’s confidence in TSMC’s ability to sustain high growth rates through the end of the decade, driven by its indispensable role in the global AI infrastructure build-out.
Geographic And Cost Risks Persist
Despite strong fundamentals, TSMC faces significant operational risks. Geographic concentration in Taiwan exposes the company to geopolitical tensions that could disrupt production. To mitigate this, TSMC has committed to a total of $265 billion in investments in Arizona, including an additional $100 billion in U.S. spending. However, the ramp-up of 2nm production is expected to dilute third-quarter gross margin by 3 to 4 percentage points due to high initial costs.
Management described demand as stronger and continuing to strengthen, suggesting that the temporary margin pressure from the 2nm ramp is a strategic investment in future capacity. The company’s strategy remains focused on securing its position as the primary supplier for advanced AI chips, leveraging its technological lead in both logic and packaging to maintain its dominant market share.
