Tesla Q2 Earnings Miss Expectations Amidst Vietnam Expansion

Tesla reported quarterly earnings that fell short of analyst projections, even as revenue exceeded estimates. The company simultaneously announced a strategic entry into the Vietnamese market and confirmed a launch date for its next-generation Roadster.
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) shares declined 1.8% to close at $358.97 on Monday, following a quarterly report released on July 23 that revealed a significant gap between actual performance and market consensus. The electric vehicle manufacturer reported earnings per share of $0.33, missing the consensus estimate of $0.50 by $0.17. Despite this profit shortfall, the company achieved revenue of $28.24 billion, surpassing the expected $26.42 billion. This 25.5% year-over-year revenue growth contrasts with a net margin of just 3.67% and a return on equity of 3.82%, indicating pressure on profitability despite top-line expansion.
The stock traded as low as $357.04 during the session, with volume dropping 39% from the average daily volume of 52,947,496 shares to 32,106,914. According to data from GN stocks/nasdaq, the company maintains a market capitalization of $1.42 trillion and a price-to-earnings ratio of 332.38. The 50-day moving average stands at $353.71, while the 200-day average is $381.26, suggesting the current price remains well below the longer-term trend line. Analysts currently project earnings per share of $0.88 for the current fiscal year, reflecting cautious expectations for upcoming quarters.
Vietnam Subsidiary Launches Distribution
Tesla has formalized its expansion into Southeast Asia by registering a subsidiary in Vietnam, which is authorized to import, distribute, and sell vehicles. This move targets a new growth market, although execution risks and local competition remain critical factors for success. The company also reported that its U.S. electric vehicle market share recovered to approximately 52% through August. However, this gain coincided with year-over-year sales declines, suggesting the increase in share may stem from competitors retrenching their EV efforts rather than a surge in demand for Tesla products.
Roadster Unveiling Scheduled For October
The company confirmed an October 1 unveiling for the long-delayed next-generation Roadster. While speculation links the vehicle to potential SpaceX-related technology, investors are seeking concrete evidence regarding production timing and pricing. Separately, Virtuix announced that Tesla placed repeat orders for Omni One Enterprise systems for its Optimus humanoid-robot program. This development provides a supporting signal for the company’s robotics division, though the primary focus remains on the automotive lineup and its near-term financial performance.
Analyst Ratings Remain Mixed

Piper Sandler and BMO Capital Markets initiated coverage with "overweight" and "outperform" ratings, respectively, while JPMorgan Chase lowered its price target from $475.00 to $445.00 with a "neutral" rating. Glj Research reaffirmed a "sell" rating in early September. Across the broader sell-side, the average rating is "Hold" with a consensus price target of $414.68.
