According to Energies Media, the grid maintained total reliability throughout the surge, avoiding blackouts or rolling outages. This performance occurred despite extreme thermal stress on equipment and the simultaneous maximum output of cooling systems across the state.
Simultaneous Record-Breaking Demand Spikes
APS reached a peak demand of 9,053 megawatts, surpassing its previous record of 8,648 megawatts set in August 2025. SRP achieved a higher peak of 9,072 megawatts, exceeding its prior benchmark of 8,542 megawatts from the same month. Both milestones were recorded within the exact same hour, creating a simultaneous regional peak that tested the limits of the local power infrastructure.
The scale of this demand represents a significant operational challenge. One megawatt serves approximately 160 average Arizona homes, meaning APS alone was powering the equivalent of over 1.4 million homes at full capacity. The simultaneous nature of these peaks eliminated safety margins, as any single equipment failure could have triggered cascading outages across neighborhoods.
