Airbnb’s CEO Claims AI Drives Record Efficiency Gains

Brian Chesky, the chief executive of Airbnb, recently declared that artificial intelligence is the most significant development in the company’s history. Speaking at a technology conference, he compared the technology to electricity, suggesting that firms which apply it effectively will capture the long-term economic value. This is not merely a philosophical stance; Chesky presented specific operational data to support the claim, stating that the platform is now shipping 80% more software than a year ago.
The most tangible impact of this shift is in customer support, where AI systems now resolve nearly half of all service tickets without human intervention. Hotel nights are growing three times faster than home nights, and a significant portion of first-time hotel guests return to book homes, indicating a genuine cross-sell effect.
However, this expansion carries risks. While Airbnb’s services roster is growing, these adjacent areas remain a small share of the overall business.
