Alibaba Unveils Zhenwu V900 Chip Claiming Triple Performance Boost

Alibaba announced its new Zhenwu V900 chip and plans for larger AI models just days before high-level talks between US and Chinese leaders.
Key points
- Alibaba unveiled the Zhenwu V900 chip, claiming it offers three times the performance of its previous generation model.
- The company plans to train a new AI model with up to 10 trillion parameters, doubling the size of its current top model.
- The announcement comes days before a state visit by China's president to the US, with AI competition expected to be a key discussion point.
Alibaba has introduced a new artificial intelligence chip it claims is the most powerful in China, marking a significant escalation in the global tech rivalry. The announcement arrives just days before a state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the United States, where artificial intelligence competition is expected to be a central topic of discussion between the two nations' leaders.
The new hardware, named Zhenwu V900, is designed to handle the intensive calculations required for training and running large language models. By releasing this technology now, Alibaba is signaling its intent to compete directly with leading US firms, even as Washington maintains export restrictions on advanced chipmaking equipment and high-performance processors.
Performance leap and model scaling
According to CEO Eddie Wu, the Zhenwu V900 delivers three times the performance of its predecessor, the Zhenwu M890. This chip is critical for
In addition to the hardware, Alibaba outlined plans to train a new AI model with between five and 10 trillion parameters. This represents a substantial increase from its current flagship model, which has 2.4 trillion parameters. For context, a parameter is a unit of learning capacity within an AI system, and larger models generally require more computing power but can handle more complex tasks.
Strategic timing before diplomatic talks
The timing of the launch is highly strategic. As reported by WRAL, the announcement coincides with preparations for a meeting between Chinese and US leaders, where trade and technology dominance are expected to be key agenda items. Analysts suggest that recent advancements in Chinese AI give Beijing greater leverage in these negotiations.
US industry leaders have recently warned that rapid Chinese progress in this sector poses a threat to American interests. This has led some to call for a broader slowdown in AI development. However, Alibaba’s move indicates that Chinese companies are continuing to push forward with self-reliance, despite being blocked from accessing some of the world’s most cutting-edge US technologies.
Data center capacity and global supply
To support these larger models, Alibaba plans to significantly expand its data center infrastructure. The company expects to reach over 20 gigawatts of computing capacity by 2032. This is a massive scale, comparable to the energy output of several large power plants, and reflects the enormous energy demands of modern AI systems.
However, global shortages in the AI supply chain are currently limiting how quickly companies can scale their infrastructure. Alibaba’s CEO noted that these constraints are slowing down the deployment of new compute resources. Despite these bottlenecks, the company remains committed to meeting rising customer demand, highlighting the intense pressure to keep pace with the rapid evolution of machine intelligence.
