LG Secures Nvidia Approval for AI Data Center Cooling and Battery Systems

LG Group is broadening its role in the artificial intelligence infrastructure market by deepening partnerships with two of the industry’s largest players. Chairman Koo Kwang-mo recently met with leaders at Microsoft and Nvidia to finalize deals that cover critical components such as cooling systems, power management, and battery storage.
These moves position the South Korean conglomerate as a key supplier for the physical hardware required to support massive AI data centers. The collaboration is not limited to selling parts; it includes integrating LG’s manufacturing and logistics operations with Microsoft’s cloud and AI platforms.
Microsoft partnership focuses on cooling and modular data centers
According to The Korea Times, the immediate priority with Microsoft is the supply of high-capacity cooling solutions. As AI workloads generate significant heat, efficient cooling is a bottleneck for data center expansion. LG will initially provide these systems for strategic locations before moving to longer-term projects.
The agreement also includes the development of prefabricated data centers. These factory-built modules are designed to cut construction time by nearly half compared to traditional builds. This approach lowers capital costs and allows for faster deployment, addressing the urgent demand for AI computing capacity.
Nvidia approves LG cooling and battery hardware
LG Electronics has also secured Nvidia’s DSX Ready approval for its coolant distribution units. This certification is a technical standard that ensures third-party hardware is compatible with Nvidia’s AI infrastructure. LG’s 2.5-megawatt unit passed this test, along with smaller 600-kilowatt and 1-megawatt models.
In parallel, LG Energy Solution’s battery storage system was selected as one of three partners meeting Nvidia’s standards. This dual approval in both cooling and energy storage suggests LG is becoming a standardized option for data center operators seeking reliable, compatible components.
Energy storage capacity expands in North America
To support this growing infrastructure demand, LG Energy Solution is scaling up its North American presence. The company operates five production sites in the region and plans to secure more than 50 gigawatt-hours of battery energy storage capacity by the end of this year.
The trade-off for these manufacturers is the need to maintain strict technical compatibility with dominant ecosystem players. While securing approvals from Nvidia and Microsoft validates their technology, it also ties their product roadmaps closely to the specific requirements of these two giants, limiting flexibility in the broader market.
