OpenAI Adds GPT-6 and Plugin Support to ChatGPT Voice

According to 9to5Mac, the voice mode now runs on OpenAI’s latest GPT-6 models. This includes the high-performance Astra version. Users can also connect external apps like email and calendar directly through voice commands.

Three new models power voice mode

ChatGPT Voice now uses three distinct GPT-6 models. The most capable option is called Astra. It has been available for a few weeks. Yesterday, OpenAI upgraded the medium and small models, Sol and Luna, to GPT-6 as well.

This means users can choose a model that fits their needs. Larger models may handle complex reasoning better. Smaller models might respond faster and use less data. The choice gives users more control over their voice experience.

Plugins bridge a major usability gap

A significant limitation of ChatGPT Voice was its isolation. It could not interact with other software tools. Now, plugins work within the voice mode. This includes integrations for email, calendar, and Slack.

This change addresses a key disconnect for many users. Previously, switching between voice chat and productivity apps was tedious. Now, you can ask ChatGPT to check your calendar or draft an email while speaking. This makes the voice assistant far more practical for daily work.

Voice control expands across devices
