Other states with high vulnerability include Virginia, the District of Columbia, California, and Utah. The ranking suggests that regions with heavy concentrations in technology, media, and administrative support roles are facing the steepest challenges in adapting to AI integration.

Specific roles face highest exposure

The report identifies a wide range of professions as particularly susceptible. These include mathematicians, proofreaders, court reporters, and various media and communications workers. Technical roles such as computer programmers, database administrators, and web developers are also listed among the most at-risk categories.

Administrative and support roles appear frequently on the list, including data entry keyers, office support workers, and payroll clerks. Additionally, creative and specialized fields like software quality assurance, medical transcription, and bookkeeping are flagged as having high potential for disruption by AI tools.

Methodology defines the risk categories

The findings are based on data from the Virginia Economic Information and Analytics Division, which determined which professions are most likely to be disrupted by AI. SmartAsset then used Bureau of Labor Statistics employment data to map these risks to specific states based on their workforce composition.

The primary trade-off highlighted by the data is the concentration of risk in specific skill sets. While not all jobs in these categories will disappear, the high percentage of vulnerable roles suggests that workers in these fields may need to adapt their skills or roles more rapidly than those in other sectors.
