UNESCO Unveils New AI Governance Tools in Riyadh

A new set of policy frameworks aims to address the environmental and social costs of artificial intelligence, though implementation remains a challenge for many nations.
UNESCO is launching a suite of new governance tools in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to help countries manage the expanding influence of artificial intelligence. The initiative, announced at a global forum involving government officials and industry leaders, seeks to provide a structured approach to AI ethics. The organization has already assisted 77 nations in developing their AI strategies, using a diagnostic framework known as the Readiness Assessment Methodology. Broadening the scope of ethical oversight
The updated framework, designated as RAM 2.0, places greater emphasis on inclusive consultation. Previous versions of the assessment gathered input from over 20,000 stakeholders, but the new version explicitly incorporates insights from groups that have historically had less influence in tech policy. This shift acknowledges that AI systems can disproportionately affect specific populations if their unique challenges are not considered during the design and deployment phases.
By integrating these perspectives, UNESCO aims to create a more robust standard for national AI strategies.
