Helsinki-based Verda secures major funding to scale its renewable-energy AI cloud, joining Europe's unicorn club with a focus on sustainable compute.

Key points

  • Verda raised €164.8 million in a Series B round led by Emergence Capital, achieving unicorn status.
  • The company operates 100% renewable-energy data centers in Finland, leveraging Nordic cooling efficiency.
  • Verda reached a €143.85 million annualized revenue run rate in July and plans global office expansion.

Helsinki-based Verda has raised €164.8 million ($189 million) in new funding, officially becoming Europe’s latest unicorn. The investment, led by Emergence Capital, is designed to accelerate the company’s expansion of its full-stack AI cloud infrastructure. Verda, formerly known as DataCrunch, positions itself as a critical player in the growing market for artificial intelligence compute resources.

The company aims to use this capital to bridge the widening gap between AI demand and available supply. By securing additional compute capacity and expanding its platform services, Verda seeks to support frontier AI teams while maintaining a strong emphasis on sustainability. This move places the Finnish firm in direct competition with larger global tech giants, leveraging its Nordic location for energy efficiency.

Full-stack approach defines Verda model

Unlike many cloud providers that rely on third-party hardware, Verda manages the entire stack from physical data centers to the software platform. Founded in 2020 by Ruben Bryon, the company controls its own infrastructure to ensure reliability and performance. This vertical integration allows Verda to optimize every layer of the compute process, from the silicon chips to the user interface.

The company highlights that its data centers in Finland run on 100% renewable energy. This setup leverages the natural advantages of the Nordic region, including cold climates that reduce cooling costs and a grid powered by hydro and wind energy. While this offers a sustainability edge, it also ties the company’s expansion to specific geographical and energy constraints.

Financial momentum and investor backing

Verda’s financial trajectory has been steep, reaching an annualized revenue run rate of €143.85 million in July. This round of funding brings its total capital raised to over €392.3 million ($450 million). Investors include major names such as MUFG Innovation Partners, Supermicro, and Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company. The participation of pension funds and industrial giants signals long-term confidence in the company’s stability.

According to eu-startups.com, the oversubscribed nature of the Series B round indicates strong market appetite for Verda’s specific value proposition. Joe Floyd of Emergence Capital noted that the gap between AI demand and supply is growing rapidly. This capital injection is intended to secure capacity quickly, a critical factor in a market where compute availability often dictates success.

Global expansion and workforce growth

Verda is expanding its physical footprint with new offices in London and San Francisco. The company plans to further extend its presence across Europe, the United States, and Asia. Currently employing around 250 people from over 40 nationalities, Verda is building a diverse, global workforce to manage its complex infrastructure. This international expansion is necessary to serve clients who require local presence and regulatory compliance.

The company is also focusing on inference capabilities, a key area of growth in the AI sector. By investing in these specific technologies, Verda aims to provide more efficient solutions for real-time AI applications. However, this rapid growth comes with trade-offs, including the need to manage a distributed workforce and integrate new markets into its existing operational framework.
