Dutch startup Boxd has raised $2 million to address the specific infrastructure challenges created by autonomous AI coding agents, moving beyond traditional container solutions.

Dutch startup Boxd has secured $2 million in pre-seed funding to build a specialized cloud infrastructure designed for AI coding agents. The round was led by BlueYard Capital, with participation from OVNI Capital, Antler, S20, and Script Capital. According to GN technics/cloud, the company aims to solve a specific bottleneck in software development: the need for persistent, isolated computing environments that can support multiple autonomous agents working in parallel.

Traditional development setups often rely on individual virtual machines or containers, which can become difficult to manage when developers run multiple agents simultaneously. Boxd argues that allowing coding agents to operate without constant supervision introduces significant security risks if the underlying infrastructure is not properly isolated. Their platform is designed to handle these demands by providing dedicated, long-running computing environments rather than disposable sandboxes.

Parallel execution needs dedicated hardware

The core of Boxd’s offering is a platform that allows teams to create as many cloud machines as required. A key feature is the ability to snapshot and live-fork running environments in under 100 milliseconds. This means developers or AI agents can create exact copies of a machine, including its active memory and network connections, to test different solutions in parallel. This approach reduces the time spent configuring separate development environments for each task.

Security through simplified virtualization

Boxd takes a different approach to virtualization by focusing strictly on essential components: CPU, RAM, storage, and networking. The company deliberately avoids emulating additional hardware such as audio devices, webcams, or USB ports. By stripping away these unnecessary elements, Boxd claims to reduce the software attack surface. This mitigation strategy is critical for running autonomous agents that might otherwise exploit peripheral interfaces to gain unauthorized access or leak data.

Persistent state over disposable containers

Co-founder Hidde Kehrer emphasizes that AI coding agents require a real computer to operate on, rather than a disposable sandbox that loses state once a process completes. Current container alternatives often suffer from security vulnerabilities and lack persistence. Boxd provides hardware-isolated, persistent virtual machines that maintain their state, enabling developers and autonomous agents to build, test, and deploy safely. The raised funds will be used to expand the team and further develop the custom virtualization engine to scale this infrastructure.
