Nigeria Targets 200 New Towers and a Satellite for Remote Connectivity

Abuja plans to bridge the digital divide by deploying base stations in hard-to-reach areas and launching a new satellite to cover gaps left by fiber networks.

The Federal Government of Nigeria is preparing to construct more than 200 telecommunications base towers before the end of December. This initiative aims to extend connectivity to underserved communities, particularly in riverine areas and the northern regions where infrastructure has historically been sparse.

Communications Minister Bosun Tijani announced that each tower is designed to serve approximately 10,000 residents. While this expansion addresses immediate local needs, the government is simultaneously preparing a more ambitious long-term solution: the deployment of a new communications satellite to reach areas that physical infrastructure cannot easily access.

Bridging the infrastructure gap

The satellite program is intended to complement a massive 90,000-kilometer fiber optic network currently under construction. Where fiber cables cannot be laid and ground-based towers are impractical, satellite links will provide the necessary bridge for internet and telephone services.

This strategy works in tandem with a separate project involving 3,700 additional towers. Together, these efforts are expected to extend connectivity to over 20 million Nigerians who currently have limited or no access to digital services. The catch, however, is that satellite coverage, while extensive, often comes with higher latency and costs compared to ground-based networks, making it a vital but specialized tool in the connectivity toolkit.

Economic growth and data protection

The government links this infrastructure drive to broader economic goals, noting that the ICT sector’s contribution to GDP has risen from 16 percent to 22 percent in three years. The target is to push this figure above 25 percent in the next four years. However, officials acknowledge that infrastructure alone is insufficient; the success of this digital economy depends on workforce skills and robust data protection frameworks.

To support this, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has strengthened its regulatory role, licensing over 350 compliance organizations and training nearly 100,000 individuals. While this ecosystem has generated significant revenue and jobs, the trade-off is a heavier regulatory burden for businesses, which must now navigate strict privacy laws to operate in the expanding digital market.
