A new film from the studio behind Coraline aims to eliminate the traditional stutter of puppet animation through digital oversight and internal mechanical breathing.

The studio known for stop-motion hits like Kubo and the Two Strings has released a new fantasy film that looks remarkably smooth. Laika’s Wildwood arrives in theaters next month, marking a significant shift in how the company approaches its craft. The goal is to move away from the jerky, stylized movements often associated with puppetry and toward a fluidity that rivals live-action cinema.

According to The Verge, the film’s visual precision stems from a mix of new technology and upgraded puppetry. While the studio has always been known for artistic detail, this production pushes the boundaries of technical realism. The result is a movie where the handcrafted feel of the puppets remains, but their movement feels far more natural and less mechanical than in previous releases.

Digital oversight smooths puppet movement

Traditionally, animators worked blind, adjusting puppets frame by frame without seeing the previous shots until the final review. This process often resulted in subtle stutters or inconsistencies in motion. Laika has now integrated digital cameras that allow animators to view recently shot frames in real-time. This immediate feedback loop ensures that every adjustment is tracked and corrected instantly, eliminating the guesswork that previously led to uneven animation.

Brad Schiff, the studio’s head of animation, described this as an evolution of the art form. He noted that there is no technical reason for stuttery animation anymore, except if it is a specific stylistic choice. By seeing exactly what they are doing as they do it, the team can ensure that the movement of every joint and limb is perfectly aligned. This level of control allows for complex action sequences that maintain a sense of physical weight and momentum.

Internal breathers add human-like life

Beyond external movement, the puppets themselves have been upgraded with internal mechanisms. The studio calls these devices breathers, which function like a diaphragm inside the puppet’s body. This feature was first tested in the 2019 film Missing Link, but Wildwood marks the first time it is used on all major characters. The breathers allow animators to control the expansion and contraction of the puppet’s chest, creating a convincing illusion of breathing.

This subtle movement helps the characters feel more alive and human. It adds a layer of organic rhythm to the performance that was difficult to achieve with purely external manipulation. The combination of smooth external motion and internal breathing creates a character that feels present and reactive, rather than just a moving object. This technical upgrade is a key reason why the film’s clips have impressed early viewers with their lifelike quality.

Story and scale of the production

The film follows a young girl named Prue who loses her brother in a dangerous wilderness. The setting is a rich fantasy world that blends natural landscapes with ornate, magical structures. Clips shown at the Toronto International Film Festival featured a tense bike chase through a bustling version of Portland, demonstrating the speed and tension the studio aimed for. The sequence felt akin to a live-action stunt scene, highlighting the success of the new animation techniques.

The production was a massive undertaking, involving 233 unique puppets and 49 animators. It took 231 weeks to complete, reflecting the intricate detail required for the project. While the studio emphasizes that the clips shown are not final, the consistency of the movement and the depth of the environments suggest a high level of polish. Wildwood is set to hit theaters on October 23rd, offering audiences a look at the next generation of stop-motion storytelling.
