BYD Sealion 08 Secures 12,000 Orders in First 24 Hours

BYD’s new flagship SUV has demonstrated significant immediate demand, securing over 12,000 orders within a day of its market launch. This rapid uptake highlights the manufacturer's expanding reach into the premium electric vehicle segment.
BYD announced that its latest flagship SUV, the Sealion 08, has become an immediate commercial success. According to data reported by Electrek, the vehicle secured more than 12,000 orders within 24 hours of going on sale in September. This performance marks a significant milestone for the Ocean lineup, positioning the Sealion 08 as a direct competitor to other large luxury electric vehicles in the global market.
The vehicle is available in both fully electric and plug-in hybrid configurations, with prices starting at approximately 34,000 US dollars. Zhang Zhou, head of sales for BYD’s Ocean division, confirmed the strong start and noted that production is currently ramping up to meet the surge in demand. The initial order volume suggests that consumers are responding positively to the combination of advanced battery technology and premium interior features offered in this price bracket.
Rapid Charging and Battery Technology
A key selling point for the Sealion 08 is its adoption of BYD’s latest Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging technology. The system allows the battery to charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes, with a full recharge from 10% to 97% taking approximately nine minutes. This speed addresses one of the common concerns regarding electric vehicle usability, significantly reducing downtime during long-distance travel.
The fully electric variant features a large 115.072 kWh battery, providing a range of up to 900 kilometers for rear-wheel-drive models. All-wheel-drive configurations offer a slightly shorter range of 800 kilometers. For those preferring a hybrid approach, the plug-in electric version includes a 55.843 kWh battery that offers a pure electric range of 400 kilometers and a combined total range of 1,650 kilometers. These specifications aim to balance daily efficiency with the flexibility of longer journeys without frequent recharging stops.
Premium Interior and Comfort Features
Inside the cabin, the Sealion 08 focuses on technology and comfort to justify its flagship status. The interior includes a 17.3-inch central infotainment screen, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, and a 26-inch augmented-reality head-up display. A notable feature is the 21.4-inch rear entertainment screen that descends from the roof, designed to enhance the passenger experience during travel.
Additional premium amenities include a built-in refrigerator, zero-gravity seats, and a 25-speaker Devialet sound system. Standard across all variants is the DiSus-A dual-chamber air suspension system, which aims to provide a smoother ride, and the God’s Eye B driver-assistance suite. These features position the vehicle against high-end competitors by offering a comprehensive package of comfort and safety technologies as standard equipment rather than optional extras.
Market Position and Global Expansion
The Sealion 08 measures approximately 5.1 meters in length, making it comparable in size to the Hyundai IONIQ 9. This launch follows the success of BYD’s Great Tang SUV, which secured over 30,000 orders in its first 24 hours. The consistent strong performance of these flagship models indicates that BYD is successfully expanding beyond its traditional lower-priced segments into the luxury and full-size SUV markets.
As part of its global strategy, BYD is launching its luxury sub-brand Denza in Europe, the UK, and other overseas regions. The strong domestic sales of the Sealion 08 provide a foundation for this international expansion. However, the trade-off for consumers considering these vehicles is the intense competition in the premium EV sector, where established brands are also upgrading their offerings with similar charging speeds and interior luxuries. The rapid order intake suggests that BYD’s pricing and feature set are currently resonating well with buyers seeking high-end electric options.
