Echion Signs Deal to Build Niobium Battery Cells in Korea

Echion and ETS will produce XNO cells targeting 50,000 cycles and 10C charging for industrial use.
Key points
- Echion signed an MOU with ETS to manufacture XNO niobium-anode battery cells.
- The cells target 50,000 cycles and 10C charge rates for industrial use.
- ETS will use its Chungju facility to customize cylindrical and prismatic cells.
Anode material developer Echion Technologies has entered into a memorandum of understanding with South Korean equipment maker Energy Tech Solution, or ETS, to develop battery cells using Echion's XNO niobium-based anode material. This partnership marks the first time Echion has secured a total battery solution provider within its partner network, focusing on production line design and cell assembly.
Under the agreement, ETS will act as a contract manufacturer for demonstration cells and product design iteration. The company will utilize its facilities in Chungju, South Korea, to customize cells into cylindrical, pouch, and prismatic form factors for customers seeking XNO technology, offering full turnkey design and manufacturing services.
Niobium anodes target industrial durability
The XNO material is specifically developed for heavy industrial applications such as mining, rail, maritime, and data centers. Echion claims that this niobium-based approach outperforms mainstream lithium-ion batteries in both performance and durability. The technology is positioned as a higher-performing alternative to lithium titanate batteries in the premium fast-charging segment.
A key technical advantage of niobium-based anodes is their operation at a higher voltage than traditional graphite anodes. This characteristic significantly reduces the risk of lithium plating during fast charging, a common failure mode in high-power battery systems. This makes the cells particularly suitable for applications requiring rapid energy transfer and long operational lifespans.
High cycle life and charge rates
ETS aims to demonstrate XNO-based batteries capable of withstanding up to 50,000 charge cycles. The target also includes charge rates as high as 10C, which allows for extremely rapid replenishment of energy. These specifications are designed to meet the demanding requirements of industrial customers who need reliable power sources for continuous operations.
Jean de La Verpilliere, Echion's CEO, stated that the collaboration leverages ETS's trusted equipment to provide customers with the necessary charging speed and cycle life. The company believes this partnership will enable businesses to produce their own XNO batteries that meet specific operational needs without compromising on performance metrics.
Manufacturing capacity and location details
Energy Tech Solution is headquartered in Seoul, with additional operational locations in Chungju and Detroit. The Chungju facility will be central to the initial production efforts, where ETS will allocate specific capacity to handle the customization of XNO cells. This geographic spread allows ETS to support Echion's global ambitions while leveraging local manufacturing expertise.
The partnership is reported by Charged EVs, highlighting a strategic move to move beyond material supply and into complete cell production. By securing a dedicated manufacturing partner, Echion aims to reduce barriers for customers who wish to adopt niobium-based battery technology for their industrial fleets and infrastructure.
