Toyota to Launch Electric Corolla in 2027 with 250-Mile Range

Toyota is preparing to electrify its most successful vehicle in history, the Corolla. The automaker plans to introduce a battery-electric version of the sedan as part of a comprehensive overhaul that also includes new hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants.

The move marks a significant shift for a model that has sold over 57 million units since 1966. While previous generations focused on reliability and fuel economy, the upcoming generation introduces a sleeker design and a multi-powertrain strategy to compete in a rapidly changing market.

Multi-powertrain strategy for new platform

According to Electrek, the new Corolla will utilize a modified version of the TNGA-C architecture. This updated platform is designed to support multiple power sources, including traditional internal combustion engines, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and pure battery-electric vehicles. This flexibility allows Toyota to tailor the car to different regional regulations and consumer preferences.

For the hybrid models, engineers are using a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. This setup is expected to deliver approximately 134 horsepower and offer a 10 to 20 percent improvement in efficiency compared to the current system. The company is also considering an all-wheel-drive option for the hybrid variant.

The pure electric Corolla is expected to offer a driving range of at least 250 miles on a single charge. Toyota plans to offer both single-motor and dual-motor configurations, providing customers with options for different performance levels. While the electric version represents a major step forward, the company has not yet confirmed whether it will be sold in the United States. The broader Corolla lineup is expected to debut in 2027 as a 2028 model year, with availability varying by region.

Pricing expectations and market timing

Industry reports suggest the gas-powered Corolla will start around $25,000, while the hybrid version will be priced near $27,000. The electric and plug-in hybrid models are expected to cost approximately $30,000. These price points aim to keep the Corolla accessible while introducing advanced technology.
