Huawei-backed Luxeed confirms the RX SUV debut on September 28, offering a lower entry price via a new battery option.

Key points

  • Luxeed RX pre-sales price drops to 269,800 yuan with the addition of an 81-kWh battery option.
  • The RX SUV is scheduled to launch on September 28, adding a fourth model to the Luxeed lineup.
  • Huawei-backed Stelato will also open pre-orders for its V8 MPV at the same event.

Luxeed, the electric vehicle brand co-developed by Huawei and Chery, has confirmed that its new RX coupe SUV will launch on September 28. This adds a fourth model to the brand’s lineup and marks a significant expansion in its market presence. The announcement was made by HIMA, the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance, which oversees these joint ventures.

Just one day before announcing the launch date, the company added a smaller 81-kWh battery option to the RX. This move reduces the starting pre-sales price to 269,800 yuan, roughly $39,980. By lowering the entry barrier, Luxeed aims to make the driving-focused vehicle accessible to a broader segment of China’s sporty electric SUV market.

Price reduction broadens market reach

The new pricing structure reflects a strategic shift to capture more customers who may not require the largest battery capacity. According to Luxeed executive Zhao Changjiang, 70% of current pre-order customers are buying the vehicle as a second or additional car. For these drivers, the efficiency of the smaller battery is often sufficient for daily commuting and weekend trips, making the lower price point a logical choice.

The RX now offers two configurations with the 81-kWh battery. The base version, which includes in-cabin LiDAR, starts at the new lower price. A higher-specification version, featuring an architecture designed for Level 3 autonomous driving, begins at 329,800 yuan. Previously, pre-orders were only available for a 100-kWh battery option, which ranged from 299,800 to 359,800 yuan.

Dual-motor options and safety features

The RX is built on Huawei’s Tuling platform and measures 5,020 millimeters in length. It offers both single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations. The vehicle uses Huawei’s Giant Whale battery platform and a new-generation high-performance electric drive system, positioning it as a mid-to-large-size electric coupe SUV.

A key distinction in the higher-specification variant is its redundant system architecture. This design includes backups for power supply, computing, braking, and steering to support advanced autonomous driving capabilities. However, it is important to note that Level 3 autonomous driving will not be available at the time of the vehicle's launch.

Stelato V8 joins the launch event

The September 28 event will also see the opening of pre-orders for the Stelato V8. This brand, developed with BAIC, is introducing its first multi-purpose vehicle. The V8 is positioned as a flagship family MPV and will be available in both battery electric and extended-range electric variants.

The V8 debuted at the Chengdu Auto Show in August and features power sliding doors with a wheelbase of 3,250 millimeters. It will be the third model in the Stelato lineup, following the S9 sedan and G9 SUV. While the RX launch is imminent, the formal launch date and final pricing for the V8 have not yet been announced.
