Nio's ES8 Hits 150,000 Deliveries in One Year

The Chinese automaker is on the verge of a major sales milestone for its flagship SUV, marking a strong start for its third-generation model.
Nio Inc. is expected to cross the 150,000-delivery mark for its third-generation ES8 this week. The achievement comes as the large all-electric sport utility vehicle approaches the first anniversary of its launch in the Chinese market.
Yang Bo, Nio’s head of user operations, confirmed the upcoming milestone in a social media post on Monday. The announcement highlights the model's rapid uptake, with the final 10,000 units delivered in approximately one month following the 140,000-unit mark reached in August.
Sales dominance within the brand
The ES8 has become the primary engine for Nio’s sales figures. According to data compiled by GN auto tech/ev: electric vehicle, the model accounted for 62.21% of deliveries for the main Nio brand in the first eight months of the year.
This concentration indicates that the company’s success is heavily reliant on its large SUV segment. In August alone, the ES8 and the more premium ES9 together made up over 80% of the brand's total deliveries, underscoring the critical importance of these vehicles to the company's performance.
New seating option broadens appeal
A significant factor in the recent sales surge is the introduction of a five-seat variant. Launched in July, this configuration expands the lineup beyond the previous six- and seven-seat options, targeting a wider range of potential buyers who prefer a larger rear cargo area over additional passenger rows.
The five-seat model is priced slightly lower than the three-row version, starting at 382,800 yuan when the battery is included. This pricing strategy, along with the availability of a battery-as-a-service plan, aims to make the large SUV more accessible while maintaining the brand's premium positioning.
Sustained growth in the market
Nio’s overall delivery numbers have also shown a positive trend, with total monthly deliveries exceeding 10,000 for the second consecutive month. August saw a 6.93% increase over July, suggesting that the momentum generated by the ES8 is helping to stabilize the company's output.
Reaching 150,000 units within a year of launch is a strong performance for a new model generation. However, the heavy reliance on a single product line presents a risk. If consumer interest shifts or competitors introduce similar large electric SUVs, Nio may face pressure to diversify its portfolio to maintain these high delivery rates.
