For ROAM, the Nairobi-based company behind the bikes, the Maasai Mara serves as a rigorous engineering test. The goal is to verify that electric motorcycles built in Kenya can withstand rough tracks and long patrols in remote conditions. The company argues that eliminating engine noise creates a serene environment beneficial to both wildlife and tourists.
Economics play a significant role in this transition. Instead of shipping petrol from the port of Mombasa to remote locations, operators can charge vehicles using solar energy on-site. This approach reduces the logistical burden of fuel transport while contributing positively to the local environment.
Infrastructure gaps remain a barrier
Despite the benefits, the technology is not a drop-in replacement without changes. ROAM's bikes can travel approximately 160 kilometers between charges, but longer patrols require charging stations along the route. These stations can be built using small solar and battery systems that plug into standard sockets, but they represent a new infrastructure requirement.
