Tata Avinya X Targets 500km Range with JLR Platform

Tata's new luxury EV leverages Jaguar Land Rover's architecture for long-range touring and rapid charging capabilities.
Key points
- Tata will use Jaguar Land Rover's EMA platform to build the Avinya X, reducing development costs and time.
- The vehicle targets over 500 km of range and adds 500 km in 30 minutes using an 800-volt charging system.
- Production is expected to begin in early 2027, positioning the car against the Mahindra XEV 9e and BYD Atto 3.
Tata Motors is set to enter the premium electric vehicle segment with the Avinya X, a model designed to bridge the gap between standard EVs and high-end luxury cars. According to CarLelo, this vehicle marks a strategic shift for the Indian automaker, moving away from adapted combustion platforms toward a dedicated electric architecture. The car is positioned as the flagship offering under the new AVINYA brand, aiming to compete directly with established rivals like the Mahindra XEV 9e and BYD Atto 3.
The core of this strategy is a licensing agreement with Jaguar Land Rover, allowing Tata to utilize the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA). This platform is engineered specifically for battery electric vehicles, featuring a flat-floor layout that maximizes interior space. By sharing this technology, Tata reduces its own research and development costs while gaining access to engineering support that shortens the time to market for its next-generation electric vehicles.
Performance driven by dual motors
The Avinya X is expected to feature a dual-motor setup that provides electric all-wheel drive. This configuration delivers instant torque and improved cornering stability, making the vehicle suitable for long-distance touring. The design prioritizes efficiency and comfort, with a crossover SUV stance that borrows lounge-like interior space from MPVs. This approach aims to eliminate highway range anxiety by offering over 500 kilometers of driving range on a single charge, a significant improvement for Indian road conditions.
Fast charging reduces wait times
A key technological advantage is the native support for an 800-volt high-voltage electrical architecture. This system allows for ultra-fast DC charging, adding up to 500 kilometers of range in approximately 30 minutes. Operating at a higher voltage reduces the electrical current required for the same power output, which in turn lowers heat buildup and cable weight. This efficiency is crucial for continuous fast-charging scenarios, offering a practical solution for drivers who need quick top-ups during long trips.
Luxury features define the cabin
Inside, the production model is expected to feature a triple-screen dashboard layout and a multi-functional steering wheel. The concept showcased voice-guided AI controls and an augmented-reality heads-up display, features likely to carry over to the final car. Comfort is a central theme, with plans for individual armchairs for all four occupants, a panoramic glass roof, and a sound system embedded into the headrests. This level of detail positions the Avinya X as a true luxury competitor, distinct from mass-market electric options.
