Tesla European Semi Specs Reveal Range and Charging Limits

Tesla has published the technical details for its electric Semi in Europe, showing a 550 km range and 800 kW charging capacity. These figures differ significantly from the US model, raising questions about the specific battery configuration and competitive positioning in a crowded market.
Tesla has officially shared the technical specifications for the European version of its Semi electric truck, revealing figures that fall short of the company's American marketing claims. The European model is rated for a maximum range of 550 kilometers (342 miles) when fully loaded with 40 tonnes of cargo. This data was released by Tesla Europe just days before the truck’s formal debut at the IAA Transportation show in Hannover, Germany.
While the headline numbers appear competitive, a closer look at the curb weight and charging speed suggests the European truck may not be the same high-capacity machine sold in the United States. As reported by Electrek, the vehicle weighs 9,100 kilograms, which is notably lighter than the US Long Range version. This discrepancy hints at a smaller battery pack, potentially limiting the actual utility for long-haul operators compared to the 805 kilometers advertised for the US market.
Weight differences suggest smaller battery
The most significant gap between the two versions is the vehicle’s base weight. The European Semi has a curb weight of 9,100 kg (approximately 20,000 lbs), whereas the US Long Range model weighs closer to 10,400 kg (23,000 lbs). In the trucking industry, a lighter curb weight typically indicates a smaller battery capacity. If the European truck is indeed equipped with a standard-range battery rather than the long-range pack, the 550 km figure represents a meaningful reduction in operational flexibility for freight companies.
Furthermore, the European rating assumes a heavier gross combination weight of 40 tonnes, compared to the 37.2 tonnes used for US ratings. Carrying more weight naturally reduces range, but the combination of a heavier load and a potentially smaller battery creates a tighter margin for error. Fleets planning long-distance routes will need to factor in more frequent stops to maintain schedule reliability, a critical concern in a market where efficiency is paramount.
Charging speed caps below US levels
Charging infrastructure also presents a trade-off for European users. Tesla specifies a maximum charging rate of 800 kW for the European Semi, which allows for approximately 60% of the range to be recovered in 30 minutes. In contrast, the US version has demonstrated charging speeds of up to 1.2 MW, recovering about 70% of its range in the same timeframe.
This reduction in charging speed likely reflects the current state of the European Megacharger network and regional power grid standards rather than a limitation of the truck’s hardware. However, for drivers, this means slightly longer stop times at charging stations. While a 30-minute break is standard, the inability to reach a full charge in that window may impact duty cycle calculations for operators relying on tight delivery schedules.
Entering a mature electric truck market
Tesla is entering a European market that is already well-served by established competitors. Brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Scania, and DAF have been selling battery-electric heavy trucks for several years, with existing service networks and financing options in place. Mercedes’ eActros 600, for example, offers a similar 500 km range, meaning Tesla’s 550 km figure is competitive but not a decisive advantage on paper.
The major missing pieces remain pricing and availability. Tesla has not yet announced a price or a specific on-sale date for the European model. Additionally, it remains unclear whether the trucks will be imported from the US or produced locally, despite previous statements about Berlin factory production. Without a clear price point, it is difficult to assess whether Tesla can displace incumbents who have already established their foothold in the European logistics sector.
