The second Xpeng-Volkswagen collaboration arrives this month with 370 kW output and advanced AI driving features.

Key points

  • The ID. UNYX 09 debuts on September 24 with single and dual-motor options.
  • The sedan features a 370 kW dual-motor system and CATL LFP batteries.
  • It integrates Xpeng's VLA-based smart driving assistance and AI assistant.

Volkswagen Anhui has confirmed that the production launch of the ID. UNYX 09 sedan will take place on September 24. The event will be livestreamed, and the company suggests that pre-sales may open simultaneously, marking a significant step for the brand in China.

This model is the second vehicle developed jointly by Volkswagen and Xpeng within the past two years. It is positioned as a B-segment intelligent electric coupe, following the ID. UNYX 08 SUV that launched in April. The sedan aims to appeal to buyers seeking advanced technology and distinct design in the competitive Chinese market.

Advanced driving tech and design

The vehicle features a "wolf-inspired" aesthetic with crystal-cut headlights and a long hood. Under the hood, it offers two powertrain options: a single-motor rear-wheel-drive version and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant. Both configurations are capped at a top speed of 200 km/h.

A key differentiator is the integration of a Vision-Language-Action large language model for smart driving assistance. Volkswagen Anhui claims this places the car's intelligence in the top tier of the market. This system works alongside an AI assistant to handle various driving scenarios, reflecting the deep technical partnership with Xpeng.

Regulatory approval and power specs

The ID. UNYX 09 was added to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology catalog in July, clearing the final regulatory hurdle for sales. The filing details a five-seat sedan with dimensions of 5,081 mm in length and a wheelbase of 3,030 mm.

The single-motor version delivers 230 kW from a rear motor, while the dual-motor version combines a 140 kW front motor with the 230 kW rear unit for a total of 370 kW. Both versions use lithium iron phosphate batteries supplied by CATL, a choice that prioritizes cost efficiency and safety over maximum range.

Strategic stakes in the EV market

According to CnEVPost, Volkswagen is leveraging this collaboration to reclaim market share in China's fierce EV sector. The partnership, initiated with a $700 million investment in Xpeng in 2023, focuses on adopting local software and platform technologies.

The Hefei plant recently rolled off its 100,000th electric vehicle, signaling increased production capacity. By embedding Xpeng's AI chips and driver assistance solutions, Volkswagen aims to offer a product that competes directly with domestic rivals on both hardware and software capabilities.
