Xpeng has confirmed the official launch date for its new five-seat flagship SUV, signaling a strategic push to stabilize its market position against major rivals.

Xpeng will officially launch its G9L, a five-seat flagship sport utility vehicle, in China on September 17. The event, scheduled for 7:00 pm, marks the final step in a process that began with the model’s global debut and pre-sales opening in August. The company aims to start deliveries immediately following the launch, positioning the vehicle as a central pillar for its upcoming sales targets.

The G9L is available in both battery electric and extended-range electric versions, with pre-sales prices starting at 259,800 yuan, or approximately $38,380. According to GN auto tech/ev: electric vehicle reports, this launch is part of a broader effort to accelerate the manufacturer’s sales recovery after a mixed first half of the year. The model shares core platform technology with the recently introduced six-seat GX, forming the backbone of Xpeng’s premium SUV lineup.

Charging Speed and Range Specifications

Both vehicle variants are built on an 800-volt ultrafast charging platform, a feature that standardizes rapid replenishment times across the lineup. For the battery electric version, the claimed range reaches up to 755 kilometers under the Chinese Light Duty Vehicle Test Cycle. The extended-range option offers a purely electric range of 435 kilometers, with a combined total range extending to 1,602 kilometers when the internal combustion engine is engaged.

These figures place the G9L in direct competition with established rivals such as the Li L7 and the Huawei-backed Aito M7. While the 800-volt architecture promises faster charging speeds than many competitors, the trade-off is the added complexity of the extended-range system, which includes an engine for generating electricity. Buyers must weigh the convenience of the larger total range against the higher maintenance requirements associated with internal combustion components.

Strategic Push for Global Expansion

Xpeng is not limiting the G9L to the domestic market. The company recently announced that the first batch of right-hand-drive production vehicles has rolled off the production line at its Guangzhou factory. These units are destined for Australia, serving as the initial step in a plan to introduce the model in 64 countries and regions. This global rollout is intended to diversify revenue streams and reduce reliance on the competitive Chinese market.

The international expansion comes with significant logistical and regulatory challenges. Adapting vehicles for right-hand-drive markets requires separate production lines and compliance with varying safety and emission standards. While the plan is ambitious, it also exposes the company to currency fluctuations and trade barriers that could impact profit margins. The success of this rollout will be a key indicator of the brand's ability to scale beyond its home turf.

Sales Targets and Market Recovery

The launch coincides with a critical period for Xpeng’s financial performance. Despite a year-on-year increase in August deliveries, the company’s total sales for the first eight months of the year remain down by over 10 percent compared to the same period last year. CEO He Xiaopeng has stated that the goal is to exceed 60,000 monthly sales in the fourth quarter, a target that represents a 53 percent increase over August’s figures.

Achieving this target relies heavily on the G9L and the upcoming Mona L05. The strategy involves covering major SUV segments with different models to capture a wider customer base. However, the high sales target is a significant stretch, requiring a substantial jump in production volume and market share. If the G9L fails to resonate with buyers, the gap in overall sales volume may persist, putting pressure on the company’s valuation and long-term viability.
