Meta has inadvertently unveiled its upcoming mixed reality headset, known internally as Project Phoenix, through a software oversight. Images of the device surfaced online after a developer found them embedded in a recently released app called HorizonOS Prescription Lens. The application, which has since been removed, was intended to help users order prescription inserts for the headset but contained high-resolution photos showing the device from multiple angles.
The leaked images confirm that Phoenix is a distinct form factor from Meta's previous Quest hardware. Unlike the bulky, self-contained headsets that have defined the company's recent history, Phoenix appears significantly lighter and closer in design to glasses-like devices such as Xreal's Aura. A visible cable extending from the side of the device aligns with long-standing rumors that the headset will rely on a tethered connection to an external processing unit rather than housing all components internally.
Software oversight reveals hardware details
The discovery highlights a common risk in software development where placeholder assets are not fully stripped before release. As reported by Engadget, the app served as a testing ground for lens prescriptions, but the inclusion of visual assets provided a clear view of the headset's side profile and rear structure. While the front-facing view remains unseen, industry observers expect it to feature a camera array. This setup is likely designed to support hand-tracking controls, replacing the need for dedicated physical controllers and allowing for more natural interaction with virtual environments.
Tethered design implies separate processing unit
The presence of a cable suggests that Phoenix will not be a standalone device. Instead, it will likely connect to a separate puck or computer that handles the heavy computational load.
