Sony Explains the Financial Reasons Behind the Physint Cancellation

Sony has outlined specific financial and scheduling concerns that led to the attempted termination of Hideo Kojima's new stealth game, a move that ultimately pushed the developer into a permanent partnership with Microsoft.
Sony has provided a detailed explanation for its decision to attempt canceling Physint, the upcoming stealth-action title from Hideo Kojima. The publisher cited missed deadlines and projected costs that significantly exceeded the initial budget as the primary drivers for the move. This explanation, reported by Bloomberg, clarifies the internal logic behind a decision that previously appeared sudden and unannounced.
The dispute has resulted in a permanent split between Kojima Productions and Sony. Following the attempted cancellation, Kojima cut ties with the Japanese giant and secured a publishing deal with Microsoft. The game is now set to launch exclusively on Xbox and PC, marking a significant shift in the long-standing exclusivity dynamics of the industry.
Budget overruns drove the decision
According to Sony, the project was on track to cost well over its allocated budget despite being years away from release. The company stated that the development timeline had slipped, leading to a situation where the financial risk was no longer justifiable. This concern about cost efficiency was a central part of the rationale for pulling funding from the project.
Revenue expectations shaped the strategy
Sony also pointed to the commercial performance of Kojima’s previous two titles, Death Stranding and its sequel. The company noted that these games did not meet its internal revenue expectations. Consequently, PlayStation was reluctant to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in another title that would not remain permanently exclusive to its own hardware, citing a need for more predictable returns on investment.
Microsoft gains a key exclusive
As reported by GN technics/gaming, the fallout from this decision has benefited Microsoft, which now holds Xbox exclusivity for Physint. This acquisition is part of a broader collaboration that includes the development of the upcoming horror game OD. While the long-term financial success of these titles remains to be seen, the partnership signals a new direction for Kojima Productions, moving away from the traditional PlayStation ecosystem.
