Apple's Foldable Screen Shipments Projected to Surge by 2030

New industry data suggests Apple could nearly triple its foldable display output within four years, challenging long-standing market leaders.
A new industry report indicates that Apple is poised to become a dominant force in the foldable smartphone market. Counterpoint Research predicts that Apple's shipments of foldable display panels could increase by 167 percent between late 2026 and 2030. This growth trajectory would see the company capture a significantly larger slice of the global supply chain, moving it from a new entrant to a major player in a niche that has historically been defined by other manufacturers.
The forecast relies on the upcoming launch of the iPhone Duo, which is expected to debut next month. Despite having only half a year of sales in 2026, Apple is projected to account for 27 percent of all foldable panel shipments for that year. This rapid adoption suggests strong initial demand, although the full impact of the device on the broader market will become clearer only as the product matures and competitors adjust their own strategies.
Samsung retains lead in 2026 market share
Even with Apple's aggressive entry, Samsung is expected to maintain its position as the market leader in 2026. The report forecasts that Samsung will hold a 33 percent share of foldable panel shipments, slightly ahead of Apple's 27 percent. Huawei is projected to follow in third place with a 25 percent share. These figures highlight a competitive landscape where the incumbent leaders still hold significant advantages in distribution and brand recognition within the foldable category, even as new entrants gain ground.
Apple share grows as rivals lag
The dynamic shifts considerably when looking at the period leading up to 2030. While the overall market for foldable panels is expected to grow by 74 percent, Apple's growth outpaces its competitors. The report projects that Apple's share will rise by 15 percentage points to reach 42 percent. In contrast, Samsung’s share is expected to fall to 24 percent, despite a 27 percent increase in its own shipments. Huawei’s share is forecast to drop to 15 percent, indicating that Apple’s entry is not merely adding to the market but actively displacing existing players.
This shift suggests that the foldable segment is moving away from a saturated state toward a new equilibrium. The trade-off for current leaders is clear: they must either innovate rapidly to defend their market position or accept a reduced role in a sector that is expanding quickly but changing hands. For consumers, this competition may lead to more diverse device options and potentially better pricing as manufacturers vie for the attention of a growing user base.
Foldable designs favor inward folding screens
The report also breaks down the technology behind these devices. In-fold designs, where the screen bends inward, are expected to remain the standard, with their market share rising from 81 percent in 2026 to 84 percent by 2030. Clamshell devices, which fold like a compact case, will see slower growth, with their share declining to 12 percent. Multi-fold devices, a newer category, are projected to see the fastest relative growth, increasing their share from under three percent to nearly five percent. This indicates that while the basic form factor is settling, manufacturers are still experimenting with new structural possibilities.
