Pearl Abyss has reached a five-year milestone with BIGEM, a program designed to help small-scale Korean game studios break into international markets. The initiative has supported 44 independent developers since its launch, providing them with the resources needed to compete against larger global competitors.
According to a report by Inven Global, the project has moved beyond simple financial aid to become a structured pipeline for overseas expansion. By handling logistics and marketing, the program allows smaller teams to focus on their creative work while navigating the complex process of international distribution.
Practical support for overseas expansion
The core of the program is the removal of logistical barriers that typically hinder small studios. Participants receive coverage for flights and accommodation, as well as operational support for booths at major international game shows. This includes events in Japan and Asia, where developers can interact directly with foreign players and industry professionals.
The support also extends to local marketing strategies and networking opportunities with overseas buyers and investors. This approach allows indie developers to test their games in new markets and gather real-world feedback. The trade-off is that participation is highly competitive, limited to a small number of selected studios each year.
Measurable business outcomes for developers
The impact of the program is visible in concrete business metrics. Among the 44 participating companies, 30 recorded growth in Steam wishlists, a key indicator of player interest. Additionally, 20 studios received significant exposure through overseas media coverage and influencer partnerships, increasing their visibility in the global market.
These efforts have translated into tangible commercial results. Participants secured nine publishing agreements or collaboration discussions and held nine investment meetings. While these numbers are modest in scale, they represent critical milestones for studios that previously lacked the capital or connections to reach international buyers.
Award recognition and future cohorts
Games supported by BIGEM have also gained critical acclaim. Titles from the program have won awards in the Indie Game category at the Korea Game Awards for three consecutive years. This includes wins for games released between 2023 and 2025, signaling that the supported developers are producing high-quality content that resonates with local audiences.
On the international stage, participants have also been honored at Gamescom Asia for three years in a row. For its fifth cohort, the program will select 12 new companies to attend upcoming events in Japan and Thailand. The goal remains to sustain a healthy ecosystem by identifying and nurturing high-potential indie projects.
