Saudi Arabia Secures Major Contract for New E-Sports Arena

A $700 million contract has been awarded to build a large-scale gaming venue in Riyadh, marking a significant step in the region's entertainment infrastructure.
China State Construction Engineering Corporation has secured a $700 million contract to build a new e-games arena in Saudi Arabia. This facility is a central component of the Qiddiya City development near Riyadh, designed to host professional gaming competitions at an international level. The project represents a substantial investment in the Kingdom's growing entertainment sector, moving from planning into the active construction phase.
The arena is designed to accommodate over 5,100 spectators, with a structure that includes two basement levels and four floors above ground. According to reports from GN technics/gaming (en-US), the construction timeline is planned to last approximately 1,000 days. This venue will not only serve as a competition space but also as a permanent hub for the gaming industry in the region.
Contract Value and Scope
The latest contract value of $700 million is higher than earlier estimates, which placed the project at around $533 million. Previous reports indicated this lower figure involved a joint venture with a local engineering firm. The increase in value suggests an expansion in scope or updated cost assessments, although specific details on the revised contractual structure have not been publicly disclosed. This financial commitment underscores the scale of the infrastructure being developed for the gaming district.
Advanced Venue Infrastructure
The arena features a massive LED video wall spanning nearly 39,000 square feet, intended to provide an immersive viewing experience for spectators. The design includes specialized seating with haptic feedback and advanced audio systems to enhance engagement during live events. A central digital display suspended above the seating bowl will deliver additional visual content, creating a multi-sensory environment that goes beyond traditional stadium layouts.
Beyond the main competition floor, the facility includes various hospitality areas, retail spaces, and food and beverage facilities. These zones are designed to operate independently of major tournaments, ensuring the venue remains active and economically viable throughout the year. The integration of these commercial spaces aims to support a diverse range of events, from professional e-sports to broader entertainment functions.
Strategic Regional Impact
This arena is one of four dedicated e-sports venues planned within the Qiddiya Gaming and E-sports District. The district is expected to house the regional headquarters for more than 30 major gaming brands, creating a concentrated ecosystem for the industry. This development aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 strategy, which seeks to diversify the economy through tourism and entertainment infrastructure.
The construction of this facility contributes to a wider program that includes other major sports and entertainment projects in the area. While the arena focuses on digital sports, it forms part of a broader effort to establish Riyadh as a global hub for live events. The long-term impact will depend on the successful integration of these new venues into the local and international event calendar.
