AMD's New Ryzen 5 5500F Shows Unexpected Gaming Gains

AMD has introduced a new budget processor, the Ryzen 5 5500F, which is priced at $99. While it looks almost identical to the existing Ryzen 5 5500 on paper, recent testing reveals a significant performance gap in gaming. The new chip is not just a stripped-down version of its sibling; it utilizes different internal architecture that results in faster frame rates in CPU-heavy games.
According to benchmarks reported by GN technics/gaming (en-US), the 5500F outperforms the standard 5500 by up to 16% in certain titles. This difference is notable because both processors are entry-level options for the older AM4 platform. The performance leap comes from a higher boost clock and updated connectivity features, making it a potentially better choice for gamers who prioritize CPU speed over integrated graphics.
Benchmarks reveal clear performance gaps
Independent testing by a YouTube creator compared the two chips in seven popular games, including Counter-Strike 2 and Cyberpunk 2077. In titles that rely heavily on the processor, such as Battlefield 6 and GTA V, the 5500F showed a clear lead. For example, in Battlefield 6 at high settings, the new chip was 16% faster, while in Cyberpunk 2077 at ultra settings, it was 11% faster.
However, the advantage disappears in graphics-intensive scenarios. When the load shifts primarily to the graphics card, the performance of both CPUs becomes nearly identical. This means the 5500F is not universally faster, but it provides a meaningful boost in games where the processor is the bottleneck, such as competitive shooters and open-world titles with complex AI.
Design differences drive the speed boost
The performance difference stems from how AMD manufactures these chips. The Ryzen 5 5500 uses a monolithic design that includes integrated graphics, which limits its maximum boost clock. In contrast, the 5500F uses a chiplet design without integrated graphics. This allows AMD to push the boost clock 200MHz higher. Additionally, the 5500F supports PCIe 4.0, whereas the 5500 is limited to PCIe 3.0.
This architectural choice means the 5500F is technically a different product, even though the naming convention suggests they are twins. The higher clock speed is the primary driver of the gaming performance gains.
