Apple has clarified the pricing structure for the AI-driven camera summaries arriving with iOS 27, revealing a tiered system that may frustrate homeowners with multiple devices. According to MacRumors, the feature, which generates text descriptions of motion alerts, is not available for all connected cameras under a single subscription. Instead, the number of cameras supported depends entirely on the monthly cost of the iCloud+ plan the user selects.
The base tier, priced at $9.99 per month for 2TB of storage, allows AI summaries for only one camera. To enable the feature for a second camera, subscribers must upgrade to the 6TB plan at $29.99 per month. For households with up to five cameras, the requirement jumps to the 12TB plan, costing $59.99 monthly. This creates a significant financial hurdle for users who previously relied on lower-cost plans for basic video recording.
Storage tiers dictate feature access
The new structure ties a specific AI capability to storage capacity rather than offering it as a standalone add-on. This approach means that a user with a 2TB plan, which is often sufficient for general cloud needs, will find that four out of five of their security cameras remain excluded from the intelligent summarization tool. The company has not introduced a separate subscription option for this feature, forcing users to purchase excess storage they may not need just to unlock the AI functionality for additional devices.
Existing recording limits differ from AI limits
This change creates a disconnect with how HomeKit Secure Video has functioned in the past. Previously, the $9.99 plan allowed unlimited cameras for secure video recording, while the cheaper $2.99 plan supported up to five. Now, the AI summary feature imposes a stricter cap that does not align with these existing recording allowances. A homeowner who has invested in multiple cameras and pays for the 2TB plan for unlimited recording will still be restricted to a single camera for the new AI descriptions.
User backlash over high costs
The decision has sparked considerable criticism online, with many users expressing dissatisfaction on forums and social media platforms. The primary concern is the steep price increase required to bring the feature to a multi-camera setup. Critics argue that tying a basic quality-of-life feature to high-tier storage plans is a poor value proposition, especially when the AI processing itself does not require additional local storage on the device.
