The outage lasted approximately 76 minutes and affected customers in parts of Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory. During this window, many users were unable to complete calls, creating a temporary gap in connectivity for both private and emergency services.
The incident raised immediate concerns about the reliability of triple zero emergency lines. Police forces in three states initiated welfare checks to ensure that individuals who attempted to call for help were not left without support. Authorities reported that these checks found no adverse outcomes, but the event underscores the critical importance of redundant systems in maintaining public safety during technical failures.
Welfare checks confirm no harm

Approximately 190,000 users experienced failed call attempts, with many trying twice without success. Victoria Police indicated they conducted around 40 specific welfare checks on affected callers. The spokesperson noted that these interventions resulted in no issues of note. A representative from Optus confirmed that checks in Tasmania and South Australia also concluded with no adverse outcomes. The telco has since replaced the faulty hardware and issued a formal apology for the disruption to its customer base.
