Apple started beta testing for iOS 27.2 on September 16, 2026. The company skipped version 27.1 entirely to avoid revealing details about an upcoming device. This update is expected to reach general users in October.
According to 9to5Mac, this numbering gap protects the iPhone Duo. That device ships on October 23 with iOS 27.1. Apple wants to keep the software code for that specific model confidential until launch.
Skipping a version number protects secrecy
Apple released the main iOS 27 update on September 14. Two days later, it began testing iOS 27.2. This jump in numbers prevents early access to code meant for the iPhone Duo.
The iPhone Duo will launch exclusively with iOS 27.1. By skipping this number for other phones, Apple avoids leaking references to the new hardware. Software paths for different models will eventually converge after this initial phase.
Health app redesign enters beta
The beta includes a completely redesigned Health app. It features three new tabs: Insights, Longevity, and Browse. The design adapts dynamically using Apple Intelligence and user data.
A new Health age feature uses Apple Watch data to track metrics. This compares your biological health to your actual age. However, this app is not expected to release to everyone until later this year.
Siri AI expands to five new languages
iOS 27.2 adds Siri AI support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. This expands the feature beyond its initial launch availability. Users in these regions will gain access to the new AI capabilities soon.
The update also brings profiles to the Apple TV app. This feature has existed on smart TVs for years but is new for iPhones. Additionally, Dual Capture for FaceTime now works in group calls for iPhone 17 users.
