MediaTek Beats Qualcomm to 2nm Mobile Chip

The Dimensity 9600 Pro arrives with a manufacturing lead over its main rival, promising significant efficiency gains but raising questions about availability and thermal management in compact devices.
MediaTek has announced that its latest flagship smartphone processor, the Dimensity 9600 Pro, is the first mobile chip built using TSMC's 2-nanometer N2P process. This move places the company ahead of Qualcomm, whose Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is expected to adopt the same manufacturing node next week. As reported by Engadget, this timing shift suggests MediaTek is prioritizing early access to the most advanced silicon available for its partners.
For consumers, the primary benefit is improved energy efficiency. MediaTek claims the new architecture reduces multi-core power consumption by 61 percent compared to the previous generation. While single-core speeds increase by 17 percent and multi-core performance by 15 percent, the reduced power draw is the critical factor for battery life in smartphones, which have limited capacity for heat dissipation.
New Architecture Boosts AI and Gaming
The chip introduces a dual-NPU architecture that integrates GPU and AI computing tasks. This design supports an Agentic AI Engine intended to handle complex artificial intelligence workloads directly on the device. MediaTek states this configuration delivers 27 percent higher peak gaming performance and 18 percent faster raytracing speeds, while simultaneously lowering power consumption at peak loads by 24 percent.
The processor also enhances media capabilities, allowing supported devices to capture video at 4K resolution with a frame rate of 120 frames per second. This feature targets high-end camera systems found in premium smartphones, offering smoother slow-motion playback and greater flexibility in post-production for users who rely on their phones for professional or semi-professional video work.
Market Position and Competitive Timing
MediaTek maintains its position as the leading manufacturer of mobile chipsets by market value, surpassing Qualcomm. The company supplies processors to major brands including Oppo, Xiaomi, Samsung, Motorola, and Realme. By securing the 2-nanometer process before its main rival, MediaTek aims to offer manufacturers a distinct advantage in performance-per-watt metrics for their upcoming device launches.
Trade-Offs in Advanced Manufacturing
Adopting a 2-nanometer process offers clear performance benefits but comes with inherent trade-offs. The higher density of transistors increases manufacturing complexity and cost, which may be reflected in the final retail price of devices equipped with this chip. Additionally, while efficiency improves, the higher peak performance demands robust thermal management solutions from device manufacturers to prevent throttling during sustained heavy usage.
