Google Patches Pixel Modem Flaw Under Targeted Attack

A critical flaw in Pixel phones' cellular modem was actively exploited, allowing attackers to gain higher privileges without user interaction.

Google has confirmed that a high-severity security flaw in the cellular modem of its Pixel smartphones was exploited by attackers in the wild. The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2026-58704, allowed for a privilege escalation that bypassed normal permission checks due to a logic error in the code. According to The Hacker News, this flaw carried a CVSS score of 8.0, indicating a serious risk to device security.

The danger of this bug lies in its ease of exploitation. It did not require any user interaction or additional execution privileges to trigger. This means an attacker could potentially compromise a device remotely or through adjacent signals without the owner knowing or doing anything to initiate the attack. Google acknowledged that it found signs of limited, targeted exploitation but declined to share details about the threat actors involved.

Modem flaw allows silent privilege escalation

In the context of mobile security, the cellular modem is a critical component that handles communication with cell towers. A logic error in this part of the system created a gap where standard permission boundaries could be ignored. This type of flaw is particularly concerning because modems operate at a low level of the operating system, often outside the reach of standard application sandboxing. Exploiting this gap could give an attacker elevated control over the device's resources.

Massive update addresses over hundred flaws

The modem issue was not the only fix included in the latest September 2026 Pixel update. Google addressed 109 other security flaws simultaneously. Of these, 88 allowed for privilege escalation, while nine enabled remote code execution, which allows attackers to run arbitrary commands on the device. There were also ten vulnerabilities that could lead to information disclosure and two that could cause the system to crash.

Among the other fixes were two high-severity privilege escalation bugs in the Kernel components and 46 critical-severity vulnerabilities in various Pixel subsystems. These components include the BigOcean system, the Bootloader, the IP Multimedia Subsystem, and the Trusted Execution Environment. The breadth of these fixes highlights the complex attack surface of modern smartphones, where multiple layers of software and hardware can harbor distinct weaknesses.

Users must update to stay secure

To protect against these vulnerabilities, users are advised to update their devices to the latest version immediately. The security patch level for these fixes is 2026-09-05. Google recommends navigating to Settings and then Security & privacy to check for and install the update. Failure to update leaves the device exposed to the known exploits, particularly the modem flaw that was already being targeted by attackers.

This incident follows a pattern seen in June 2026, when Google patched a high-severity flaw in the Android Framework that was also under active exploitation. The repeated targeting of specific, high-impact vulnerabilities suggests that attackers are focusing on weaknesses that offer significant control over the device. For users, this underscores the importance of keeping software up to date, as manual security measures cannot compensate for unpatched system-level flaws.
