Google is expanding access to its smart home ecosystem by allowing external AI tools to manage devices, marking a shift toward a more open platform for home automation.

Google has introduced a new Model Context Protocol server that allows third-party AI agents to interact with Google Home devices. This development moves beyond the traditional model where only Google’s own Gemini assistant could control lights, thermostats, and security systems. By opening this layer of the infrastructure, users can now connect compatible external AI tools to inspect device states, review historical activity, and send control commands.

The practical implication is that smart home management is no longer tied to a single voice assistant. Instead of relying solely on built-in features, users can utilize various AI agents to build custom workflows, such as checking if devices were left on while away or creating personalized dashboards. This approach treats the home as a data-rich environment that can be queried and managed by different software partners, provided they adhere to the new protocol standards.

Open Protocols Enable Flexible Integration

The Model Context Protocol is an open standard, meaning it is not exclusive to one vendor’s ecosystem. Google lists specific examples of compatible clients, including Claude, Antigravity, and OpenClaw, in its developer documentation. This openness allows different AI providers to plug into the same underlying smart home infrastructure without forcing users to switch ecosystems entirely.

For the average user, this means greater choice in how they interact with their home. Rather than being locked into one assistant’s personality or command structure, homeowners can select the AI agent that best fits their workflow. The device layer remains the same, but the interface layer becomes interchangeable, potentially reducing the fragmentation that has historically existed between different smart home brands.

Safety Limits Protect Sensitive Actions

Granting external software control over physical hardware introduces significant security risks, and Google has addressed this with strict limitations. The system applies rate limits to prevent rapid, potentially harmful command sequences and explicitly blocks sensitive actions like unlocking doors. These safeguards are designed to ensure that even if an AI agent behaves unpredictably, it cannot compromise the physical security of the home.

Users retain full control over access permissions. They can revoke an agent’s ability to manage devices through their Google account settings at any time. Additionally, access to sensitive data, such as Familiar Face recognition, requires a separate consent step. Google also advises users to inform other household members when an external agent is connected, as it may have visibility into shared device data.

Current Availability Is Limited

Despite the strategic importance of this feature, it is not yet widely available. Early access is currently rolling out only in the United States and is restricted to Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers. This tier carries a monthly fee and requires users to set up a Google Cloud project with specific credentials, a process aimed at developers and tech enthusiasts rather than the general public.

There is no confirmed timeline for broader availability in other regions, including Malaysia.
