Windows Update files can quietly consume a significant portion of smaller solid-state drives, impacting system responsiveness. A new guide details how to safely reclaim this space.

For many users, the solid-state drive that boots Windows is not the largest piece of storage in their computer. It is often a smaller, older drive used specifically for the operating system and essential applications. This setup is common among people who upgrade their hardware over time, reusing existing components to save money. While this approach works well initially, it creates a specific problem: limited headroom.

As reported by XDA Developers, a user recently discovered that Windows Update files had accumulated to occupy nearly 20% of their 250GB boot drive. On a larger drive, such as a 1TB or 2TB unit, this amount of data might be negligible. However, on a smaller drive, this accumulation can lead to performance issues. The user decided to investigate and clean up these files to restore available space and potentially improve system speed.

Built-in tools reveal hidden storage

The first step in reclaiming space does not require complex command-line tools. Windows includes a storage management feature that breaks down what is using up disk space. By navigating to the System settings and selecting Storage, users can view a detailed list of file categories. This includes temporary files, delivery optimization files, and remnants of previous Windows installations.

In the user’s case, selecting these categories and removing the files freed up a noticeable amount of space. However, the user noted that leaving the cleanup to happen only when storage is critically low is not ideal. Windows has a feature called Storage Sense that can automate this process. By changing the setting to run every month rather than only when low on space, users can prevent these files from accumulating in the first place.

Deep cleaning the component store

Even after using the built-in cleanup tools, some space may remain locked away in the Windows Component Store, often referred to as WinSxS. This folder holds versions of system components that are needed for updates, repairs, and optional features. It is not safe to delete files from this folder manually, as doing so can break the operating system.

Instead, users can use a tool called DISM, which is included with Windows. By running a specific command in an administrator command prompt, users can analyze how much space the component store is taking up. Another command allows Windows to remove superseded components, which are older versions that are no longer needed. In the reported case, this process freed up approximately 5GB of additional space.

Space does not guarantee speed

It is important to understand that freeing up disk space does not automatically make a solid-state drive faster. If a drive has ample free space, such as a 1TB or 2TB drive, removing a few gigabytes of update files will likely have no noticeable impact on performance. The drive is still operating within its optimal range.

However, when a boot drive is nearly full, performance can degrade. Solid-state drives need some free space to manage wear leveling and write operations efficiently. A drive that is constantly at capacity may experience slower write speeds and increased latency. The catch is that this issue is only significant if the drive is actually running low on space. For users with large drives, the effort to clean up these files may not be worth the minimal gain.
