Only 13% of RingCentral customers use paid AI, leaving room for growth as the company spends over $250 million on development.

Key points

  • Only 13% of RingCentral's customer base has purchased paid AI products, representing a significant growth opportunity.
  • The company is investing over $250 million in R&D, primarily focused on developing AI capabilities.
  • Customers using paid AI features show higher net retention rates and higher average revenue per user.

RingCentral is positioning artificial intelligence as a primary driver for future revenue growth and customer retention. The company’s leadership indicates that while AI is currently a small part of its total revenue, it is significantly boosting the value derived from existing clients. This shift marks a move from viewing AI as an experimental add-on to integrating it as a core component of their communication services.

According to reports from Yahoo Finance, the company sees a substantial opportunity to expand its AI offerings. Currently, only a fraction of its customer base has adopted these paid features, suggesting significant untapped potential. The strategy relies on the idea that customers who use AI tools stay longer and spend more, creating a more stable financial foundation for the firm.

Early adoption drives higher retention

The financial impact of AI adoption is already visible in specific metrics. Customers who purchase at least one paid AI product exhibit higher net retention rates compared to those who do not. This group also generates higher average revenue per user, indicating that AI features effectively increase the lifetime value of a client. This trend suggests that AI is not just a new product line but a tool for deepening existing relationships.

Despite this positive signal, the majority of RingCentral’s customer base has not yet adopted these tools. With over 600,000 customers in total, the company estimates that the current AI revenue represents only about $350 million of its total base. This gap highlights the scale of the opportunity ahead. Management describes this as a long runway for growth, implying that broadening adoption is the next critical step.

Heavy investment in research and development

To fuel this growth, RingCentral is committing more than $250 million to research and development, with the bulk of that spending directed toward AI products. This substantial investment reflects a strategic priority to build robust AI capabilities into its core platform. The company is also using these tools internally, having piloted AI solutions with thousands of its own engineers to improve productivity and development workflows.

The company is also adjusting its marketing approach to align with how customers now discover software. As AI-driven search tools become more common, RingCentral is reallocating resources away from traditional search engine optimization. This shift ensures that its branding and content are optimized for AI-led discovery processes, keeping the company visible in a changing digital landscape.

Balancing growth with financial stability

While focusing on AI, RingCentral maintains a solid financial footing. The company expects to maintain gross margins of roughly 80% and improve operating margins throughout the year. It also projects generating more than $7 in free cash flow per share. These figures suggest that the aggressive AI investment is not coming at the expense of short-term profitability or cash generation.

The core unified communications business remains the backbone of the company, accounting for about 80% of its revenue. This stable base supports the higher-growth AI segment, which is expanding from a smaller starting point. By leveraging its established customer base and channel partners, RingCentral aims to convert its large existing market into a driver for its new AI initiatives.
