Apple has released a detailed study to support its claim that the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 deliver the most accurate heart rate sensing in the wearable market. The company aims to move beyond marketing language by providing specific comparative data against major rivals, including smart rings and fitness bands. This move addresses a common skepticism among tech buyers regarding the reliability of optical heart sensors during intense physical activity.
The new Health Sensing System combines updated electrical and optical sensors with refined signal processing algorithms. According to 9to5Mac, this hardware upgrade is central to new features like Recovery HRV and the Readiness app. By benchmarking its technology against established devices, Apple is attempting to quantify the practical benefits of these improvements for everyday users and athletes.
Rigorous testing across two continents
The study involved 1,460 adults participating in tests across the United States and Malaysia during the summer of 2026. Participants wore the Series 12 on one wrist while simultaneously wearing a competing device on the other. A Polar H10 ECG chest strap, widely considered a gold standard for accuracy, served as the reference point for all measurements.
The test scenarios were designed to be demanding, covering outdoor running, cycling, and high-intensity interval training. Apple also included everyday activities like desk work and walking to measure background accuracy. The conditions specifically targeted known weaknesses in optical sensors, such as rapid wrist movement and the phenomenon where a sensor mistakes running rhythm for a pulse.
Competitors face statistical comparison
Apple compared its watch against several leading devices, including the Garmin Forerunner 970, Google Pixel Watch 4, and Samsung Galaxy Watch 8. The lineup also included the WHOOP 5 fitness band and the Oura Ring 5, which was worn on the index finger. This broad selection allows users to see how the watch performs against both direct wrist-based competitors and alternative form factors like rings.
The results show that the Apple Watch Series 12 achieved statistically better accuracy than every comparison device in 139 out of 159 individual activity and measurement comparisons. While the margin of error varies by activity, the data suggests a consistent performance edge. This is particularly notable given that many competitors have their own proprietary health algorithms that are highly regarded in the fitness community.
Accuracy comes with a price tag
The trade-off for this improved sensing capability is the cost. The Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399, while the Ultra 4 begins at $799. These prices are positioned at the premium end of the wearable market. For consumers, the decision now hinges on whether the marginal gain in heart rate accuracy justifies the higher entry price compared to mid-range competitors.
Both models are currently available for pre-order and will launch in the coming week. The study provides a data-driven argument for the upgrade, but individual experiences may vary depending on skin tone, fit, and specific workout types.
