A new federal award moves a wearable health monitor from prototype to production, aiming to reduce hospital staffing strain through continuous patient tracking.

Senphonix has received a federal grant from the US National Science Foundation to advance its SleeveSense wearable monitoring system. This funding, part of the Small Business Technology Transfer program, supports the transition of the device from a research prototype to a manufacturable product.

The project is a collaboration with the University of Arizona, focusing on strengthening the wireless and radio-frequency components of the sleeve. The goal is to create a reliable tool that tracks vital signs continuously, easing the workload on clinical staff during hospital stays and after patients go home.

Grant Focuses On Hardware Reliability

According to GN auto tech/wearables coverage, the immediate engineering challenge is refining the antenna and power systems. These components must function consistently in the complex electromagnetic environment of a hospital while being optimized for mass production. This technical groundwork is essential before the device can be widely adopted in clinical settings.

Timeline For Clinical Testing

Senphonix plans to begin clinical testing in late 2026 or early 2027. Following these trials, the company expects to submit the device for regulatory review by the US Food and Drug Administration in early to mid-2027. It is important to note that the product is not currently approved for medical use.

Balancing Innovation With Practical Limits

While the technology promises continuous, comfortable monitoring, it remains in the development phase. The trade-off for this advanced capability is the time required to meet strict safety and regulatory standards. Patients and hospitals cannot yet rely on SleeveSense, as it must first prove its accuracy and safety in real-world clinical trials.
