Somali Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi met with a delegation of Egyptian military officers in Mogadishu on Saturday, according to FTL Somalia. The visit, accompanied by Egypt’s Ambassador to Somalia, Mohamed Salah Keshtah, marked the latest step in a rapidly expanding security partnership between the two nations.
During the meeting, officials focused on strengthening bilateral relations and advancing collaboration in the defence sector. Minister Fiqi acknowledged Cairo’s support for Somali sovereignty and its role in combating terrorism, while both sides exchanged views on matters of mutual strategic interest.
Deepening military ties since 2025
The current engagement builds on a formal defence agreement signed in August 2025 by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. Since that accord, Egypt has begun contributing weapons and equipment to bolster the Somali National Army, signaling a shift from diplomatic dialogue to tangible military support.
This cooperation has been framed by Somali leadership as a testament to shared goals against international terrorism. The frequency of recent high-level contacts suggests a sustained commitment to integrating Egyptian expertise into Somalia’s security architecture, rather than isolated symbolic gestures.
Egyptian troops planned for Middle Shabelle
Beyond bilateral aid, Egypt’s involvement is expanding within the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty confirmed that troops will be stationed in the Middle Shabelle region to work alongside Somali forces.
President El-Sisi indicated in February 2026 that deployment arrangements were in progress. The mission aims to strengthen local capacity and ensure civilian protection, representing a significant physical presence of Egyptian military assets on Somali soil.
Strategic motivations and implementation challenges
Cairo views Somalia’s stability as directly linked to its own national security, particularly regarding Nile water disputes and Red Sea geopolitics. However, analysts note that the partnership remains largely at the protocol stage, with the specific pace of capability transfer to the Somali National Army still unclear.
The key question moving forward is whether these commitments translate into measurable improvements in Somali military capacity.
