Nigeria Youth Agenda Forms Ahead of 2027 Elections

ActionAid Nigeria has launched a coordinated initiative to empower young Nigerians to shape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to the organization, a one-day summit held in Abuja served as a focal point for this broader national effort, aiming to move beyond abstract democratic principles toward concrete policy demands. The program seeks to ensure that the voices of younger citizens are integrated into the formal electoral process, rather than remaining peripheral to national discourse.

Defining Democratic Priorities

Leadership from ActionAid Nigeria emphasized that democracy is fundamentally about the process of resource allocation and accountability. Celestine Odo, representing the Country Director, noted that the summit focuses on how public resources are expended and who benefits from that expenditure. According to Odo, the goal is to secure 'democratic dividends' by ensuring that the struggle for political authority translates into tangible improvements in governance and service delivery.

Blessing Ifemenam, a program advisor at the organization, explained that the emerging agenda will reflect issues raised directly by young Nigerians. These priorities include unemployment, climate justice, gender inclusion, and broader participation in democratic structures. She stated that the objective is to provide a clear, collective statement of what young people expect from political actors, thereby creating a mechanism for holding elected officials accountable to specific promises.

Constitutional and Institutional Concerns

Participants in the summit voiced significant concerns regarding the current state of Nigerian governance. Christian Ojotu, a youth participant, described the democracy as being in a state of 'coma,' citing electoral malpractice and questions over judicial independence as primary drivers. He argued that the constitution remains the central issue requiring urgent attention, suggesting that the current legal framework may not be functioning as intended to protect democratic norms.

According to Ojotu, constitutional reforms are necessary to address disparities in the application of laws across different regions of the country. This perspective aligns with the broader objective of the summit, which is to strengthen youth participation in governance. By identifying shared concerns and articulating a common charter, participants hope to create a robust framework for democratic accountability that addresses both procedural and substantive flaws in the current system.

National Reach and Informed Voting

The initiative is not limited to the capital city but is being implemented across various contexts in Nigeria. Vivian Bassey, a governance specialist with ActionAid, explained that the program brings together young people from diverse networks to reflect on their lived experiences. This approach allows for the consolidation of shared concerns into a cohesive agenda, ensuring that the perspectives of marginalized or geographically dispersed youth are included in the final document.

Uwamfon Nsa, another participant, commended the organization for creating a space for informed decision-making. According to Nsa, the primary benefit of the program is enabling young Nigerians to make better-informed choices at the polls. As the 2027 elections approach, the forward question remains whether this collective Youth Agenda will gain sufficient traction to influence party platforms and whether the political establishment will respond to these structured demands from the next generation of voters.
