Eighteen men accused of orchestrating the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse have been extradited to the United States. According to reports from Africanews, the suspects arrived in the US over the weekend to face criminal charges in federal court.
The defendants appeared in Miami on Monday, where they were arraigned on allegations of conspiracy to kill or kidnap the former head of state. US prosecutors assert that the plot was planned and financed from within the United States, with the aim of replacing Moïse with a figure chosen by the conspirators.
Charges allege coordinated conspiracy
The indictment includes conspiracy to provide material support for the killing, a charge that carries a potential sentence of life in prison. Defense attorneys have identified Joseph Badio, a former employee of Haiti’s Ministry of Justice, as the central figure in the plot. Badio was arrested in October 2023 after evading capture for more than two years.
Haiti justice system constraints
Haiti’s Ministry of Justice stated that it surrendered the suspects to US authorities to ensure their trial could proceed. The ministry noted that domestic legal proceedings face significant difficulties due to the ongoing instability and gang violence that have disrupted the functioning of the local justice infrastructure.
This transfer shifts the burden of prosecution to US federal investigators. While at least nine individuals have already been convicted or pleaded guilty in related cases, the arrival of these 18 defendants marks a significant step in seeking accountability for the president’s death.

US Magistrate Judge Lisette Reid assigned legal counsel to the defendants and scheduled future court dates during brief hearings in the Southern District of Florida.
