A Canadian trucker has been sentenced to nine years in a U.S. prison for his role in a large-scale cocaine conspiracy linked to an international cartel.
Iqbal Singh Virk, a 58-year-old owner-operator from Brampton, Ontario, was sentenced to nine years in federal prison in the United States. The judge in Los Angeles accepted his plea agreement, in which he admitted to participating in a cocaine conspiracy that moved more than 1,800 kilograms of drugs from the Los Angeles area into Canada. Despite loading legal goods to disguise their intent, customs officers discovered 115 bricks of cocaine worth an estimated $4 million hidden in a secret compartment at the rear of their trailer. The pair was detained immediately, effectively ending their attempt to smuggle the narcotics into Canada.
