Indonesia Ferry Missing in Java Sea Amid Storm
Search and rescue teams are battling severe weather conditions to locate remaining passengers and crew after the Virgo Transport 8 lost contact with its operator in the Java Sea.
One person has died and 102 others have been rescued from an Indonesian passenger ferry that lost contact during a storm in the Java Sea, according to local officials. The Virgo Transport 8, which was carrying 243 people on board, disappeared from radar in the early hours of Sunday while traveling between Java and Borneo.
The vessel had departed from Surabaya on the island of Java on Saturday, heading toward Banjarmasin, a port city on the island of Borneo. I Putu Sudayana, head of the local search and rescue office in Banjarmasin, stated that the ship encountered rough weather conditions before communication was cut off.
Challenging Rescue Conditions
The last known position of the ferry was approximately 81 nautical miles from Banjarmasin, according to the AFP news agency. Rescue ships and a helicopter have been deployed to the area, but the operation has been significantly hampered by waves reaching heights of 2.5 meters. Sudayana described the situation as extremely risky, noting that even larger rescue vessels are at great risk in such conditions.
Recent Maritime Incidents
This incident follows a series of maritime tragedies in the region last month. A fire on a ferry sailing between Bali and Lombok resulted in one death and left five people missing. Additionally, in July, a ferry carrying more than 70 people sank near Selayar Island, located south of Sulawesi.
Ongoing Search Operations
Authorities are continuing to search for the remaining passengers and crew members. The severity of the weather remains a critical factor in the search efforts, with officials warning of the dangers posed to both the missing individuals and the rescue teams operating in the area.
