The confirmed death toll from a catastrophic fire on a Philippine passenger ferry has risen to 76, with 13 individuals still missing. The Philippine Coast Guard announced on Saturday that search teams recovered an additional 41 bodies from the M/V June Aster, which was found adrift off the coast of Palawan province. The vessel had been carrying 132 passengers and crew members when the blaze erupted on Wednesday evening.
According to Al Jazeera English, the incident occurred just 2.2 kilometers from the island of Coron. Rescuers managed to pull 43 survivors from the water during the initial emergency response. Investigators have noted that witnesses reported hearing successive explosions before the flames rapidly consumed the lower decks, a detail that has intensified scrutiny of the vessel’s safety protocols and the actions taken by the captain in the early moments of the disaster.
Investigation into rapid fire spread
Maritime officials are currently reviewing the conduct of the ship’s command and the adherence to safety procedures. Commodore Noemi Cayabyab, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard, indicated that environmental factors, specifically wind conditions, may have accelerated the spread of the fire. She noted that many passengers reportedly jumped into the water without having sufficient time to retrieve their life jackets, a factor that likely contributed to the high number of fatalities.
Forensic identification and recovery efforts
Identifying the victims has become a complex and time-consuming process. Forensic teams from the Philippine National Police are working alongside local agencies to match remains with personal belongings and DNA samples. Authorities have stated that these procedures are being conducted in accordance with established protocols to ensure accurate identification for the families of the deceased. The ferry operator, Atienza Interisland Ferries, has issued a public statement pledging full transparency as the investigation proceeds. The company has committed to assisting affected families by providing lodging, transportation, and medical care. While the operator has expressed its support for those impacted, the formal review of the captain’s actions and the vessel’s capacity limits suggests that questions regarding liability and regulatory compliance will remain central to the ongoing inquiry.
