False Video Claims Berlin Ballots Destroyed Ahead of Election

In the final days before Berliners cast their votes for state and district assemblies, a video has circulated widely on social media platforms. The footage purports to show a man opening postal voting envelopes and discarding ballots marked for the Alternative for Germany (AfD), while leaving those for the center-right Christian Democratic Union intact. According to Deutsche Welle, which reviewed more than a dozen posts sharing the clip, several accounts have presented the video as evidence of organized election fraud, amassing hundreds of thousands of views on the platform X.

Despite the alarming nature of the claim, experts and election officials have raised significant doubts about the authenticity of the materials shown. The video is gaining traction against the backdrop of recent political tensions, particularly following the AfD’s strong performance in Saxony-Anhalt. However, a detailed examination of the visual evidence suggests that the documents and procedures depicted do not align with the official protocols for Berlin’s upcoming elections.

Official documents do not match footage

Stephan Bröchler, the state returning officer for Berlin, stated that the election papers shown in the video are not authentic. He noted that the envelopes depicted do not match the official specifications used for this specific election cycle. Furthermore, the method in which the envelopes are sealed appears suspicious and inconsistent with standard postal voting procedures.

Official guidelines indicate that voters receive a specific package containing a signed voter declaration, known as a Wahlschein, along with two envelopes and ballot papers for both the city-state and district assemblies. In the viral clip, however, the signed declaration is entirely missing, which would render any mail-in ballot invalid. Additionally, the person in the video opens a red envelope to retrieve a white one, a sequence that does not correspond to the official distribution of election materials.

Visual inconsistencies undermine credibility

Beyond the missing paperwork, background details in the video raise further questions. Large grey bins allegedly containing postal ballots are visible, marked with a version of Berlin’s coat of arms featuring the city’s bear emblem. According to Bröchler, such markings are not used by Berlin’s election authorities. He described the presence of the bear logo on the bins as unknown and uncommon, suggesting that the setting may be fabricated or unrelated to official counting stations.

The combination of missing legal prerequisites and incorrect visual identifiers leads to the conclusion that the video is likely staged. The footage appears designed to create a narrative of fraud rather than documenting an actual event. Officials emphasize that the absence of the mandatory voter declaration alone is sufficient to invalidate the process shown, making the claim of destroyed valid votes logically unsound.

Coordinated networks amplify disinformation

The rapid spread of the video appears less driven by organic public interest and more by coordinated inauthentic activity. According to an investigation by the Lithuania-based research organization Debunk, one of the primary accounts sharing the video has been linked to a network of automated or manipulated profiles. Researchers identified signs of coordinated behavior, including unusually high posting volumes, frequent account renaming, and evidence of purchased followers.

This pattern suggests a deliberate effort to boost the visibility of the disinformation campaign rather than a genuine viral trend. As the election date approaches, the distinction between organic discourse and coordinated manipulation becomes increasingly important for voters. Authorities are urging the public to rely on official channels for information regarding the integrity of the electoral process.
