Germany's Chief of Defence Elected NATO Military Chair

General Carsten Breuer, Germany’s Chief of Defence, has been elected as the next Chair of NATO’s Military Committee. The selection took place during a conference in Copenhagen on September 19, where defence chiefs from the alliance’s 32 member states gathered to discuss strategic priorities.

Breuer will assume the post in summer 2027 for a three-year term, succeeding Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius praised the appointment, citing Breuer’s strategic foresight and his key role in restructuring the Bundeswehr. Pistorius stated that Breuer would bring significant experience to an alliance facing historic challenges. Outgoing Chair Admiral Dragone also congratulated his successor, highlighting Breuer’s operational judgment and deep familiarity with NATO structures.
